Patient, Friends, and Family Education Material about the basics of Addiction: (This is a Rough Draft) How do we lose control when faced with intense emotions and a sense of urgency? The gut clench we feel when the vagus nerve is triggered results in trains of thought and ideas which can affect how we see the world around us. When triggered by a cue ,our basal ganglia produce a series of responses that manifests as habit. This provides us with a series of ideas about what comes next. Sensations from the outside world result in a series of perceptions. Our desires and limbic system produce the trains of thought that we experience as ideas and fantasies. Our ability to reason inolves activity in the frontal lobes. During states of urgency reason and frontal lobe activity is diminished.
